Essential Gear

  • Espresso Machine
The heart of your setup. Look for a machine with stable temperature control and at least 9 bars of pressure. Entry-level machines are great for beginners, but investing in a quality machine pays off in consistency.
  • Burr Grinder
Freshly ground coffee is non-negotiable. A burr grinder ensures even particle size, which is crucial for balanced extraction. Avoid blade grinders—they produce uneven grounds.
  • Tamper
A sturdy tamper helps you compress the coffee grounds evenly in the portafilter. Consistent tamping pressure is key for even water flow.
  • Scale
Precision matters. Use a digital scale to measure both your coffee dose and the yield of your espresso shot.
  • Fresh Coffee Beans
Use high-quality, freshly roasted beans. Espresso is best within 2-4 weeks of roasting.

Steps to the Perfect Shot

  1. Grind & Dose
Grind 18-20g of coffee for a double shot. The grind should be fine, like table salt.
  2. Tamp Evenly
Distribute the grounds in the portafilter and tamp with firm, even pressure.
  3. Brew
Lock the portafilter into the machine and start the shot. Aim for 25-30 seconds for a double shot (about 36-40g out).
  4. Taste & Adjust
If it’s sour, grind finer or increase the dose. If it’s bitter, grind coarser or decrease the dose.

Final Tips

  • Use filtered water for the best taste.
  • Clean your machine and grinder regularly.
  • Practice makes perfect—keep notes and tweak your process.

With the right gear and a little patience, you’ll be pulling café-quality espresso at home in no time.
